Life is Silly

In my previous post I mentioned that I like movies with "heart and a dark, morbid undertone." To further expand on this description I enjoy movies that deal with real human emotion and can take a light hearted look at the things that we tend to take way too seriously in real life. Like death or romantic relationships. I tend to review two movies soon that I feel exemplified these criteria quite well. I mentioned that I was looking for a movie to watch while Amanda was at Wicked with a friend. I ended up watching 4 hours of "I love the 80s in 3-D." Leaving me with the suspicion that the 80s really were very rediculous and not to be taken seriously. If you consider the fact that there has been an "I love the 70s" "90s" and two other "I Love the 80s" volumes we see that the world hasn't been taken seriously since the 60s. And the 80s were the silliest decade of all, garnering three chapters. Granted, the decade was longer than the others, having one more leap year within the decade (3 as opposed to 2), but it does seem to have been quite a bit sillier than either the 70s or 90s, and therefore deserving of all three "I Love the 80s" episodes. Given the show "Best Week Ever" is such a hit, I think it is safe to say that we don't take ourselves much more serious now, even with the world seeming to crash in around us.

UPDATE: just to clarify, the 80s sucked. Not awesome, or totally tubular. They sucked. I was cool, but that was about it.

Those 80's shows are really funny...funny stupid. I like seeing the old commercials. Did you see the one..I think it was 85...where they introduced fruit roll ups as a new product and made them sound like health food?

The 80s were awesome...every day back then I woke up blow dried my hair as big as I could get it...slapped on a shinny jacket with shoulder pads, drew on a bit of eye liner and gave it my eighties all!

Pic to prove it!

"I Love the 80s" in 3D??? Has VH1 completely given up on creative programming... or music? Is everything a mindless plug of pop-culture nostalgia? That just justifies all the more why I don't have cable or a dish: too much crap.

I'm not very fond of the 80s either, but I'm coming to find out that the 90s may not have been as good as I remember them either. who knew?

Why are you up at 5:45 in the morning? I guess it would be 6:45 your time.

If you were in high school in the '80s, they were actually quite fun.

Anne -- I remember my mom buying fruit roll-ups (called something else, though -- can't remember) at a health food store around 1980.

I don't remember much about the 80"s because I was too busy keeping up with 3 little boys that were born in 1977, 1979, 1981. So the 80's were all about nursery and preschool. Little boys consumed my life!

Kyle,
If you were born in 1979 you are too young to fully appreciate I Love the 80's....in 3-D no less. I graduated in 1986 so those years were the peak of my pop culture. How sad is that?

When something is cheesy and lame my wife and her friend call it "80s" (an adjective).

Come on, big hair, make up on dudes, horrible catch phrases, the overuse of new technology...

It's pretention at it's worst. It's not like those mindsets don't exist today, but a whole decade dedicated to pretentious self-indulgence? Not a fan. There is some great music and art from the 80s, but it's all precursor to the 90s, anyway.

I guess the only thing more pretentious than the 80s is a guy who barely knew what was going on at the time trying pass judgement.

I am slightly insulted that with two comments dedicated to pretention and self-indulgence you don't mention me anywhere. That is a horrible lack of respect.

Tucker, you are pretentious and self-indulgent. I hadn't planned on insulting you, but you literally asked for it. Althought I do like your hat. Always have.

Kyle, you're right, the '80s totally sucked. I'm glad I spent most of the decade in the fog of single-digit youth. I'd rather have had to deal with the ongoing saga of the Ninja Turtles than the increasing disenfranchisement of the lower classes by the Great Communicator.

However, some things from the '80s are okay. I'm thinking here of U2, Tom Petty, and ... that's about it.
